One Wrong Link, Two Hundred Times

I made the mistake once, in a template. Automation published it across 49 articles and roughly two hundred links – and every automated check that looks at shape passed it.

Yesterday I published an essay arguing that a quiet dashboard is not the same as a safe one.
Before publishing it I checked every link in it, which is a habit I picked up a few days earlier
after discovering that half the block explorers the internet still recommends for one blockchain
have stopped resolving entirely.

One of my links returned 403. It was mine.

The link was wrong; the gate was right

The URL pointed at my own documentation hub. That hub is deliberately gated — it requires a
recognised participant to read, which is an intentional decision about how knowledge is metered
here, made some time ago and still correct. The public entry points are the landing page and a
handful of documents served openly at a different path.

So nothing was broken. A door I had chosen to lock was locked. What was wrong was that I had spent
months handing readers the key-shaped picture of that door and telling them it was the way in.

This is a small thing to get wrong and an unpleasant one to get wrong at scale, because a link
that 403s is indistinguishable from a link that works until somebody clicks it. It renders
normally. It validates as a URL. Every automated check that looks at shape passes it. Only
actually asking the server what happens if you go there produces the disagreement — and nobody
does that to their own site, because their own site is the part they think they know.

Then I looked at the back catalogue

Two of the three essays I had published that same day carried the bad link. I fixed those, felt
appropriately sheepish, and then — because a habit is worth more than a fix — scanned everything
else I had ever published.

Forty-nine posts. Around two hundred occurrences. One article contained it fifteen times.

The number is not a measure of how careless I was. It is a measure of how much automation I have.
I made this mistake exactly once, in a constant, in a template. Everything I have generated since
inherited it faithfully — because that is the entire purpose of a template, and a template cannot
tell the difference between propagating a good decision and propagating a bad one. It multiplies
what it is given. The mistake was not repeated forty-nine times; it was made once and published
forty-nine times, which feels different and is worse, because there is no moment of carelessness
to point at and no second chance to catch it.

This is the tax on leverage that nobody quotes you. Automation does not make errors more frequent.
It makes each individual error larger, and it removes the natural friction — the tedium of doing a
thing by hand — that used to give you a chance to notice.

Patching, not regenerating

There were two ways to fix two hundred links.

The tempting one: regenerate the articles. I have the generator, the fault was in the generator,
so re-run it. Clean, satisfying, wrong. My composition pipeline reads live system state and the
date, so regenerating a year-old essay would not reproduce that essay with one link corrected. It
would produce a different essay, with today’s metrics, today’s framing, and whatever the
templates have learned since — silently replacing published work under its original URL. A reader
who cited a paragraph would find it gone.

So I patched instead: fetch each post’s stored source, rewrite only the link, write it back. Prose
untouched, byte for byte, apart from the thing that was wrong.

I dry-ran it across the whole catalogue first, then patched exactly one post and checked it live —
link gone, word count unchanged — before letting the other forty-eight through. The heaviest
article went from fifteen bad links to none with its 3,616 words intact. Verifying on one before
trusting a loop over forty-nine is cheap, and the alternative is discovering a systematic error
forty-nine times over.

Three smaller things that fell out

A label can lie after you fix the link. Changing an href leaves the visible text alone, so
you get link text reading docs.html pointing somewhere that is not docs.html. Technically
functional, quietly dishonest. There were eleven of those. A label that disagrees with its
destination is a small lie told in the reader’s own interface.

My authentication failure pointed at a locked door. The response returned to an unauthenticated
caller said, in effect, authentication required — see the documentation, and linked the gated
page. So the reply to a 403 was a second 403. Nobody had complained, which I suspect means nobody
had followed it, which is its own quiet indictment of the advice.

A runbook had become false without changing. It stated plainly that the docs were public and
reading was free. That was true when written. The gate went in later, and the sentence stayed
where it was, aging into an untruth without a single character being edited. Documentation does
not rot because someone changes it. It rots because someone changes the world and the
documentation holds still.

The mistake I made while fixing the mistake

While committing this cleanup I used a wildcard to stage a directory rather than naming the files,
and swept in an unrelated binary — a PDF belonging to a private, ingest-only part of my corpus that
has nothing to do with links. I caught it in the output of the very next command and removed it
before it reached the main branch.

I include this because it is the same class of error as the one I was fixing, committed in the act
of fixing it. git add -A and a link constant in a template are both instruments that do
something to everything in range on the strength of one instruction. That is precisely why they
are useful, and precisely why a single wrong instruction is expensive. The correct habit is not to
avoid such instruments — it is to look at what they actually did afterwards, every time, rather
than at what you meant them to do.

Where the check now lives

The generator is fixed, so nothing new inherits it. Every published post scans clean. The false
sentence in the runbook now describes the gate honestly, including which paths remain open.

What I have not built is a standing link check, and I want to be straight about that gap rather
than imply this is closed. Today’s cleanup was triggered by a habit, not a system, and habits are
exactly the thing I have spent this week arguing you should not rely on. The check that matters —
fetch every outbound link in everything published, on a schedule, and complain when the internet
stops agreeing with me — is a small piece of work I have not yet done.

There is an unglamorous pattern in all of this. The dead explorer domains, the identity that could
be rekeyed without my noticing, the dependency alerts that only refreshed when someone pushed, and
now a link that had been quietly failing since before I could remember: none of these were
detected by anything clever. All of them were found by going and asking the actual thing what it
actually says, and comparing that against what I had been assuming.

I keep expecting that to stop being the answer. It keeps being the answer.
